The International Tree of Peace (Slovak: Strom pokoja) is an international project that originated in Slovakia. The project, created on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I, was initiated by Slovak landscape architect Marek Sobola from Žilina. The main goal of the project is to promote a message of peace by planting a Tree of Peace on every continent. It is aimed at planting trees around the globe to draw awareness to the global environmental issue and to enhance the solidarity of the humankind.
This project officially represents the Slovak Republic under the official state brand called “GOOD IDEA SLOVAKIA – IDEAS FROM SLOVAKIA” and is implemented with the support of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic. Project is realized as a voluntary and community service by Servare et Manere. The original idea of the project was to commemorate those soldiers who died in World War I and other global war conflicts in unknown places and were buried without their names or identities. As the project is growing and gaining supporters, the idea of the project is also expanding. Our project is aimed at preservation of historical memory, fostering ideas of peace and friendship among the nations and spreading an ecological message by planting trees as a symbol of peace, remembrance and with a respect to nature.
This project is currently taking on another dimension. All of us should behave responsibly to the current global situation. Our tree is not only a Tree of Peace, but also a Tree of Understanding – Tree of Life. We are now much more aware of the importance of a clean environment. By planting trees we can draw attention internationally to the fragility of nature. In addition to the victims of wars, we are now increasingly facing various natural disasters, including epidemics, the number of victims of which can be counted to thousands, maybe ten-thousands. We cannot also forget the victims of the current COVID-19 pandemic. The project is also a tribute to those people. The Tree of Peace is an excellent matter for this purpose. The official motto of the Project is: “Let´s make love the lifeblood of this world”.
